“Because I feel that, in the Heavens above
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of ‘Mother’”
– Edgar Allan Poe
Only mothers know the feeling of bringing a precious new life onto this earth. The bond that forms between a baby and mother is like nothing else. It’s no secret that motherhood comes with a full dose of incredible challenges. The emotional and physical efforts of raising an infant and fostering a young life into the wonders of this world are hard enough. Doing this while trying to make an Olympic Team is on another level.
Meet USA Olympian, wife, mom to two, mentor and badass “Wonder Woman” – Alysia Montaño!
A seven-time USA Champion in the 800m and Olympian. Alysia knows the power of running like a girl. “I think that a lot of people say things like you run like a girl. That doesn’t mean you have to run soft or you have to run dainty. It means you’re strong.” Alysia is showing all our young women out there the strength and beauty of running like a girl – and running like a mom. In 2014, Alysia grabbed the attention of the national media by competing while eight months pregnant. She did so again, this time five months pregnant, in the 2017 National Championships. So she literally knows what it’s like to run like a mom.
Born in Queens, NY and now residing in Berkeley, CA with her husband, Louis and their 3-year-old, Linnea and 7-month-old, Aster.
