What is your favorite motivational quote?
Jack London's Credo- "I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist.I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. "What is your favorite hard workout?
Throughout the years, my favorite workout has reminded 400 m intervals. When I was young, 8x400 was challenging. As I have matured as a runner, in the winter my 400 repeats have hit 20 reps. I always know this workout will test me but it is so fulfilling when I run the final rep and know I am fit.
What do you feel it benefits?
I believe this workout benefits all adapts of my athleticism. It helps my mental confidence, my strength, and my speed. I believe mastering the 400 and feeling comfortable running it is key to mastering the 1500.
When do you like it? (Before, during, the last half, not until it's over, etc.)
I always love this workout. I become nervous before it, more nervous than I would before a race. I always believe it is a good nervousness, though. When I have only a few reps left it becomes difficult but I enjoy it because at that point I am in a rhythm and generally feel it is time to pick up the pace and see what I can do. Overall, afterwards it is rewarding but I enjoy the process.Do you do best with other people running with you during the workout, or is it best done solo?
Often times I enjoy running alone but when I am doing a long workout I prefer help. Best case scenario is running with someone who can push me through the workout and help me stay even throughout the first half.Do you recommend other runners try it?
Yes. I always recommend 400 repeats. The distance is significant to all events. It's the perfect workout for anyone who hopes to become stronger mentally and physically.
What do you do for recovery after this workout and before your next?
For recovery after tough workouts, I replenish my depleted muscles with protein and nutrient rich foods. I love taking Epsom salt baths for inflammation and use a band to stretch my legs. In preparation for workouts, I roll out my calves and take time perfecting drills to concentrate on good form and efficiency.
